Ben Platt (‘Dear Evan Hansen’) shares his ‘Wicked’ first Tonys memory [WATCH] Jun 1st 2017, 23:30, by Daniel Montgomery
“I was with my mom, who was sweet enough to come and spend the day with me in the city,” says Ben Platt about the day he was nominated for his first Tony. “With my four best friends, we had some coffee in the morning, had some vegan gluten-free treats, and we just watched it all unfold and freaked out and cried. You think about what that moment might be like, but it’s never as incredible as it is in reality.”
Platt is nominated for Best Actor in a Musical for his role as the title character in “Dear Evan Hansen,” a high schooler with social anxiety disorder who breaks his arm and struggles to find anyone who will sign his cast. The 23-year-old Platt has been on Broadway once before, spending a year in “The Book of Mormon” in the role of Elder Cunningham that had been originated by Tony nominee Josh Gad. The young actor is the heavy favorite to win this year according to our most recent racetrack odds. “Dear Evan Hansen” is also the frontrunner for Best Musical.
But this won’t be Platt’s first time at the Tonys. His father Marc Platt is a producer, so Ben got to attend the awards in 2004 when his father’s show “Wicked” was up for Best Musical. “I got to watch Idina Menzel win, and sit behind her family and see them react to her winning,” Platt remembers. “That was absolutely insane.”
