Faith Soloway cabaret show asks, ‘Should Transparent Become a Musical?’ May 26th 2017, 22:30, by Daniel Montgomery
“‘Cause I’ve got one hand in my pocket, and the other one is penning a cabaret show inspired by ‘Transparent.’” Okay, that’s not really the Alanis Morissette lyric, but it might have been if she had written that song in 2017. Season three of “Transparent” ended with Shelly Pfefferman (Judith Light) singing “Hand in My Pocket” during her one-woman show aboard a cruise ship, and now the New York Times reports that ‘Transparent’ really is going to get its own musical — sort of.
Faith Soloway, the sister of “Transparent” creator Jill Soloway and a writer for the Amazon series, is developing a cabaret performance titled “Should ‘Transparent’ Become a Musical?” that is coming to Joe’s Pub in New York City on June 19. The performance will include original songs, and ticket sales will benefit Americans United, a nonprofit organization that promotes the separation of church and state.
So will we soon see “Transparent” vying for Tonys as well as Emmys? Goodness knows there have been stranger Broadway adaptations, from “Legally Blonde” to “Spider-Man” to “Ghost.” But we probably shouldn’t hold our breaths. “There’s no pressing musical about to happen,” says Soloway. “It’s going to be such a long burn.” Though perhaps we can hope for a musical episode of “Transparent” someday. Plenty of shows have done that, including “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Ally McBeal” and “Scrubs.”
