|Embeth Davidtz chats ‘liberating’ and ‘terrifying’ role in ‘Ray Donovan’ [EXCLUSIVE VIDEO] May 25th 2017, 19:00, by Chris Beachum
“It was a little intimidating at first,” admits Embeth Davidtz during our recent webcam chat (watch the exclusive video above) when asked about joining the cast of “Ray Donovan” in season four. “I always feel like I’m the new kid at school coming in the first couple of days, but after the initial terror of that, the really exciting thing was just diving in and starting to get into working with them.” This Showtime series stars Liev Schreiber as a Hollywood fixer who struggles to balance his personal and professional life. Davidtz plays Sonia Kovitzky, an art dealer who enlists Ray’s help and falls in love with him.
The actress reveals that showrunner David Hollander was at first unsure of what would draw Ray to Sonia. In case of a sex scene, Davidtz informed him that she had recently had a mastectomy from breast cancer, and was in the midst of reconstructive surgery. “I sort of saw his eyes got huge,” she recalls, unaware at the time that one of the main story threads for the season would be a breast cancer scare for Ray’s wife, Abby (Paula Malcomson). The eventual nude scene, “was liberating for me, and sort of terrifying for me on a lot of levels, too.” Nevertheless, it, “felt like it was the right thing to be doing, and felt gratifying in terms of the work.”
Davidtz has had prominent guest roles on such shows as “Mad Men,” “Californication,” and “In Treatment.” She’s mostly known for her film work, including “Schindler’s List,” “Matilda,” “Bridget Jone’s Diary,” “Junebug,” and “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.”
“Ray Donovan” has been slowly building in momentum with the Emmys, snagging nominations last year for Best Drama Actor (Schreiber), Best Drama Supporting Actor (Jon Voight), and Best Drama Directing (Hollander), as well as a victory for Hank Azaria as Best Drama Guest Actor. Could Davidtz’s risky storyline lead to a nomination for Best Drama Supporting Actress?
